About MCS Counselling

My name is Maria and I am a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist providing therapy for an extensive range of issues. I fully understand the courage involved in beginning your therapeutic journey and I am here to support you through the process. Together we will create a safe space without judgement, where we can compassionately explore your unhelpful thoughts and behaviour patterns impacting your life. I will help you develop skills and strategies to overcome challenges and support you on the path to a fulfilling life. We are all individuals who experience the world differently so the sessions will be tailored to your needs and wants.
I have strong experience working with many common mental health difficulties including anxiety, OCD, depression, anger management, low self-esteem, and procrastination. My services are not limited to these areas and I’m always happy to talk.
If you feel ready to step into therapy, or if you are curious to know more, I warmly invite you to get in touch for a free, no obligation introductory call.

WHAT IS COGNITIVE BEHAVIOUR THERAPY

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)  helps people learn how to identify and change the destructive or disturbing thought patterns that have a negative influence on their behavior and emotions.

Cognitive behavioral therapy combines cognitive therapy with behavior therapy by identifying maladaptive patterns of thinking, emotional responses, or behaviors and replacing them with more desirable patterns.

Cognitive behavioral therapy focuses on changing the automatic negative thoughts that can contribute to and worsen our emotional difficulties. These spontaneous negative thoughts also have a detrimental influence on our mood.

Through CBT, faulty thoughts are identified, challenged, and replaced with more objective, realistic thoughts.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Knowing what to expect from treatment is important for both physical and mental preparedness.

Here’s what each CBT session entails:

1. The First Session

The first CBT session is all about assessment. Here we will explore the problems you’re facing, and what you’d like to achieve through treatment.

We will ask questions about the various areas of your life. This will give us an idea of the key factors contributing to your problem so we can devise appropriate treatment.

2. Successive Sessions

Each CBT session will follow a pre-outlined structure to ensure that you get the most of your time. It’ll begin with a brief check-in, reviewing the previous session and homework and setting the agenda together.

In treatment sessions, expect to spend more time working on ways to solve your problems. You will focus on learning and practising the diverse skills required to tackle your problems.

Homework will continue to be a part of treatment sessions, enhancing their effectiveness. The tasks assigned in each session are designed to help you practice and perfect the skills necessary to tackle your challenges.

The goal is to equip you with the tools and skills needed to become your own therapist.
